Pope Francis and the Digital Faith Revolution: A Legacy Rooted in Africa

A Eulogy by Sr. Josephine Bertha Awino

Francis, the bridge builder

When the history of 21st-century evangelization is told, Pope Francis will be remembered not only as a spiritual shepherd but as a digital pioneer. His papacy started a quiet revolution, a revolution that rendered the Gospel accessible to our generation. Nowhere was this more evident than in Africa. On November 2, 2022, Pope Francis launched the Building Bridges Initiative, a bold synodal encounter between the pope and university students. It was more than a program; it was a prophetic gesture. The Building Bridges Initiative affirmed the creativity, agency, and mission of young Africans in the life of the Church.

Francis Inspired Young Africans

Thanks to this prophetic initiative, the seeds of leadership and vision have flourished among African youths. Today, we celebrate the success of 56 young people from 18 African countries who, inspired by his call, have begun to turn their ideas into action. After a successful Digital Youth Faith Formation, these youth have embarked on various projects, utilizing technology and digital platforms to reach people far and wide.

While many embarked on localized projects in their respective communities, others embraced digital platforms to exercise the evangelization mission they received from the pope. For instance, through innovative software tools they have developed, they are spreading the message of Jesus Christ in new and creative ways, ensuring that the Gospel reaches hearts across the globe.

Together we are stronger

In his address to African Youth Faith Influencers, he urged them to unite against those exploiting the Earth. This poignant phrase summarizes his profound commitment to community, unity, and the Ubuntu spirit—the belief in our interconnectedness and the potential for discovering Jesus within one another through collective efforts.

Furthermore, Pope Francis believes that development commences with the recognition of the sanctity of our shared environment. Inspired by his call, African youths now collaborate—young, old, physically and mentally challenged—to construct a future where both the physical and digital realms serve as platforms for disseminating divine love.

God is not Afraid of New Things

This word of Pope Francis, “God is not afraid of new things,” resonates deeply with us today. Through his dream, we are embracing the power of technology to make the Word of God accessible to all, showing that God’s message is timeless, adaptable, and ready to meet us in every corner of the world. As we continue to innovate and evolve, we do so with the faith that his inspired is in us, knowing that our efforts will bear fruit for generations to come.

As you now join the ranks of the ancestors, hear the words of our mouths. Papa, we have decided to keep you in our hearts, as we strive to imitate your good example. We will walk forward, guided by your vision and your love for the Church, for the youth, and for all of God’s people. Your legacy will live on in the digital evangelization that is changing lives and hearts across Africa and the world. We thank you for showing us the way. May your spirit continue to lead us, as we follow in your footsteps.
