Fr. Edward Obi, MSP, earned a Ph.D in Social/Theological Ethics at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium in January 2009, specializing in the Ethics of Natural Resource Management in Nigeria’s Niger Delta Region. His doctoral dissertation defended a notion of participatory ownership, which could create the context for these resources to be owned inclusively rather than exclusively and, therefore, contentiously. Dr. Obi is a lecturer in Moral Theology/Social Ethics at the Catholic Institute for West Africa (CIWA), Port Harcourt, and combines this with practical work on the reform of social structures and the institutions that perpetuate social injustice. He advocates for corporate responsibility and good governance for sustainable peace in the region. As Executive Director of Gas Alert for Sustainable Initiative (GASIN), and Executive Secretary of the Niger Delta Catholic Bishops’ Forum (NDCBF), he has participated in numerous high-level engagements with corporate, professional and academic bodies, diplomatic missions and government agencies in Nigeria and overseas. Among others, he has made expert presentations at the USEPA-ECOS Training Conference on the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), Washington DC; World Bank CSO Forum on Social Accountability in Resource-Rich Developing Countries, also in Washington DC; the Chatham House Engagement on the Transparent Management of Africa’s Oil Wealth, London; and the international Conference on Fragile Ecosystems, DePaul University, Chicago. He has been National Coordinator of NACGOND for nearly seven (7) years. This is a broad NGO coalition with a mandate to advocate, among others, for clean-up of the Niger Delta region and Corporate Accountability in the oil and gas industry. Fr. Obi was also Board Chairman of Dawn in the Creeks (DITC) Ltd, a grassroots peacebuilding initiative, funded by the US State Department’s Conflict and Stabilization Organization (CSO) program in the Niger Delta. This program has now ended.
